  4. Dear Merlin volunteers,

  6. PROJECT STATUS
  7.  
  8. 1.  VOLUNTEERS
  9.  
  10.     As many of you know, we released a "Call for Volunteers" last
  11.     Monday, June 3rd.  This was e-mailed to representatives from
  12.     Team OS/2 and OS/2 User Groups around the world.  It was also 
  13.     posted on the Internet at:

  35.     In the four days since the announcement was released, the
  36.     response has been overwhelming!  In that short time, we received
  37.     over 100 new applications for volunteers.

  39.     OUR VOLUNTEERS NOW INCLUDE:
  40.  
  41.     +300 volunteers representing 30 countries
  42.  
  43.     - We would like to welcome volunteers from Brazil, Denmark,
  44.       Finland, Japan, Mexico, Slovania, and Taiwan to the project.
  45.       In particular, the Brazilians have enthusiastically
  46.       embraced the project.
  47.  
  48.       BUT WHERE IS ITALY AND SOUTH KOREA????
  49.  
  50.     We now have 39 of the 50 United States participating.
  51.  
  52.       BUT WHERE IS?:  Hawaii, Idaho, Kentucky, Maine,
  53.       Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota,
  54.       Vermont, and Wyoming
  55.  
  56.     BUT WE CAN'T STOP HERE.  WE NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS FOR
  57.     THE PROJECT.  PLEASE KEEP RECRUITING!
  58.  
  59. 2.  EVENT DATE
  60.  
  61.     Unfortunately, we have not set the date for the event yet.
  62.     I am still having discussions with the Merlin launch team.  We
  63.     have ruled out September for a variety of reasons (including 
  64.     Jewish religious holidays).  Most likely in will be in October.  
  65.     I hope to resolve this soon.
  66.  
  67. 3.  SCRIPT
  68.  
  69.     I have begun work on the script which will be delivered
  70.     in both INF and HTML formats.  I have determined that it
  71.     will be necessary to divide the script into two parts:
  72.  
  73.     Part I - for site selection, determining personnel
  74.              requirements, and other preparatory items.
  75.  
  76.     Part II - the actual script for the presentation.  We
  77.               will not know exactly how to to write this until
  78.               we get the beta-code (now scheduled for mid-June).
  79.  
  80.     One of our volunteers has come forward to offer his services;
  81.     David Moskowitz, who is no stranger to demonstrating OS/2,
  82.     has offered to help prepare the script (Part II).  We
  83.     welcome his advice.
  84.  
  85.     I hope to get Part I out very soon.
  86.  
  87.     By the way, many thanks to the people who suggested various
  88.     web sites to visit during the demo.  This will be included
  89.     in the script.

  91. 4.  VENDORS
  92.  
  93.     As most of you know, we are hoping to demonstrate the
  94.     latest offerings from Lotus in the event.  However,
  95.     I have also been in contact with other vendors to solicit
  96.     the use of their native OS/2 based products during the event:
  97.  
  98.     *  Volunteer Joel Krautheim of SPG is considering a special
  99.        demonstration version of his ColorWorks product (v2.0).
  100.  
  101.     *  Bryan Minor of Mt. Baker Software may be able to give
  102.        us a demo version of his company's new Money Tree
  103.        product for OS/2 (also scheduled for release this
  104.        Fall).  Money Tree is a financial planning/management
  105.        application (a la Quicken).
  106.  
  107.     *  For games, I hope to have a real surprise for you;
  108.        a state of the art OS/2 based killer app which I just
  109.        saw the other night.

  111. 5.  HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS
  112.  
  113.     IBM is still in the process of specifying the hardware
  114.     requirements for the demonstration (which will be included
  115.     in Part I of the Script).  This will include requirements
  116.     for speech navigation (e.g., microphones).
  117.  
  118. 6.  WEB PAGE
  119.  
  120.     Work on the web page is progressing nicely:
  121.  
  122.     *  IBM is still in the process of selecting a suitable web 
  123.        site/server for the event (possibly equipment left over 
  124.        from the Olympics).
  125.  
  126.     *  We also have to resolve (with IBM) which web browsers
  127.        to use and how to access the web site.
  128.  
  129.     *  Lyne Eaker & Jim Whitelaw of the Central Alberta OS/2 
  130.        (CAOS/2) Users' Group in Edmonton, Canada have graciously 
  131.        volunteered their web site as our back-up.
  132.  
  133.     *  Breckan Morris & Craig Andrew Bradney of Sydney, NSW, Australia
  134.        have been diligently putting our web map together.  They
  135.        have a working prototype in place.  If you would like to

  143.        PLEASE REMEMBER, THE WEB PAGE IS STILL UNDER DEVELOPMENT;
  144.        BOTH THE WORLD MAP AND MOCK-UP ARE JUST THAT:  "WORKING
  145.        MOCK-UPS," AND DO NOT NECESSARILY REPRESENT THE FINAL
  146.        VERSION.

  148.        I think Breckan & Craig are doing an outstanding job.

  151. 7.  THE LOGO
  152.  
  153.     The logo developed by Algis Zakarauskas of Winston Hills, 
  154.     NSW, Australia has received rave reviews from both the
  155.     volunteers and IBM.  However, we cannot use the word,
  156.     "Merlin" in the logo and we will, consequently, have to
  157.     eliminate it from the logo.
  158.  
  159.     PLEASE REMEMBER THE MERLIN LOGO WE RELEASED A FEW WEEKS AGO 
  160.     IS STILL UNDER DEVELOPMENT.  IT IS NOT "OFFICIAL" YET.
  161.  
  162.     Hopefully, Algis will have something for us soon.
  163.  
  164.     Also, due to the laws governing trademarks, the name "Merlin" 
  165.     will not be used in the final product (the final name is yet to
  166.     be announced by IBM).  "Merlin" is the code-name for the project,
  167.     not the final product.

  169. 8.  ADVICE
  170.  
  171.     Based on the last update (May 24th), I have heard from
  172.     various user groups who have already met to plot their
  173.     strategy locally:
  174.  
  175.     - Las Vegas users have already organized a project team
  176.       and begun to select demo sites.
  177.  
  178.     - Connecticut users are contacting local computer stores.
  179.  
  180.     - And within our own Tampa Bay OS/2 Users' Group (TBOUG),
  181.       we have already targeted four computer stores and a
  182.       local university.
  183.  
  184.     Like I mentioned in the May 24th update, NOW IS THE TIME
  185.     TO GET ORGANIZED!
  186.  
  187.     - Contact and meet with local volunteers participating in
  188.       the project.  Attached, please find the latest log of
  189.       volunteers by e-mail address and telephone number.
  190.  
  191.     - Recruit additional volunteers from your area.
  192.       Please register your volunteers with me by e-mailing
  193.       their:  Name, Address, Telephone, Fax, Web page (if any),
  194.       BBS (if any); also, please indicate if he/she is a member 
  195.       of an OS/2 user group and/or Team OS/2.
